The Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A Chinese temple can refer to any temple which is used for the practice of Chinese folk religion, a conglomeration of China's three main religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Chinese Buddhist temples are different from these temples.

Inside a typical temple, it is considered quite common to see elements of Buddhism and Taoism mixed together. A statue of Guan Yin may be present alongside traditionally Taoist deities such as the Jade Emperor or Mazu.

Many Chinese temples in China were damaged or destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. However, Chinese temples are a common sight outside of Mainland China, including most parts of East Asia and across the world where there is a plurality of Chinese-descent residents.

Architecture

Shrine to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea.

Chinese temples are usually red in colour, although gold ones exist as well. The architecture is traditionally Chinese in style, and they are decorated extensively with sculptures and sometimes traditional Chinese paintings. Larger temples may be built as a compound, with an outer wall and often a courtyard. In the courtyard there may be a chimney-like structure made of bricks, or this may be located outside the temple. This is used for burning joss paper or hell money to the gods, ancestors or spirits. Spiral incense may also be found burning here. Over the entrance of the temple compound there will be a plaque with the name of the temple in Chinese (usually the characters are read from right to left).

At the entrance to the main temple area, there will be a large container for burning joss sticks or incense. It will generally be filled with ash, and it is into the ash that the incense or joss sticks are placed. In some temples, however, the incense burner may be placed further inside. If the incense burner is placed on a table, oil lamps may be placed beside the incense burner, to allow worshippers to light the incense. If the incense burner is free-standing there will generally be a table in front of it with a lamp to light the incense from. Some temples have three or more incense burners. There may also be holders for stick candles, and "wish candles" may be placed in front of the incense burner.

On the far wall of the temple will be placed the main shrine. There are usually three main shrines in a temple, and there may be smaller ones as well in other parts of the temple. For example, the Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur has three shrines: One to Shui Wei Sheng Niang, the waterfront goddess, one to Mazu, the sea goddess, and one to Guan Yin, the benevolent goddess. The altar is usually made out of wood, and it usually has several different levels, with the statue placed on the highest one. Usually two vases of flowers will be placed in front of and to the side of the statue. Offerings of fruits are placed on the altar, arranged in a pyramid shape. Oil lamps are also placed on a lower level of the altar, and typically consist of a glass filled with oil, with a wick placed in a cork floater. Sometimes the statues are placed in glass-fronted cabinets, and wooden tables are placed in front of them to hold the required paraphrenalia. Padded cushions for kneeling are usually placed in front of the altar.

Worship

Worship in Chinese temples usually consists of making offerings to the various gods, spirits and ancestors. The main act of worship is lighting incense or joss sticks. These are generally provided to worshipers by the temple in exchange for a small donation. Worshipers generally take three or nine incense sticks and light them from an oil lamp placed beside the burner. They hold the incense sticks in both hands while bowing the head and present them as an offering to the god(s) in the temple. Larger incense sticks called joss sticks are also used in worship. Candles are also lit to the various gods. These candles are red and are made with a stick down the middle, and the stick is placed in special holders beside the incense burner, which consist of metal trays with holes in them. Larger "wish candles", which are generally colourful and made in the shape of a flower, may also be lit, and they are usually placed on a table in front of the incense burner. These are generally used in the same way that votive candles are used in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox worship.

The burning of joss paper is also practiced in Chinese temples. There is a special chimney-like burner for this, either situated outside the temple or, if the temple is big enough, in the temple courtyard before the main temple. In these temples there are usually candles placed there for many special reasons.

The YM1 was a motorcycle produced by Yamaha from 1964 to 1966. It used a 305 cc 2-stroke engine. It shared common parts with the 246 cc YDS3 and was virtually identical in all respects with the exception of bore and stroke.

The YM1 featured an oil-injection system that fed oil to the carburettor intake, the oil flow increasing as the throttle was opened. This gave the motorcycle sufficient lubrication for the crankshaft, cylinders, connecting rods, and pistons without requiring premixing of the oil and gas and with reduced use of oil.

Blue/white, red/white and black/white models were available for the YM1, which had a top speed of approximately 100mph.

Presently, the YM1 sells for between $1,500 and $5,000 depending on condition. The YM1 was originally priced under $800.

Boost control is the principle of controlling the boost level produced in the intake manifold of a turbocharged or supercharged engine by affecting the air pressure delivered to the pneumatic and mechanical wastegate actuator. Boost controllers can be as simple as a manual boost controller which can be easily fabricated oneself. One may also be included as part of the engine management computer in a factory turbocharged car, or an aftermarket electronic boost controller such as those made by Apex-i, Gizzmo Electronics or GReddy.

Principles of operation

Without a boost controller, air pressure is fed from the charge air (compressed side) of the turbocharger directly to the wastegate actuator via a vacuum hose. This air pressure can come from anywhere on the intake after the turbo, including after the throttle body, though that is less common. This air pressure pushes against the force of a spring located in the wastegate actuator to allow the wastegate to open and bypass exhaust gas from reaching the turbine wheel. In this simple configuration, the spring's springrate and preload determine how much boost pressure the system will achieve. Springs are classified by the boost pressure they typically achieve, such as a "7 psi spring" that will allow the turbocharger to reach equilibrium at approximately 7 psi.

One primary problem of this system is the wastegate will start to open well before the actual desired boost pressure is achieved. This negatively affects the threshold of boost onset and also increases turbocharger lag. For instance, a spring rated at 7 psi may allow the wastegate to begin to (but not fully) open at as little as 3.5 psi.

Achieving moderate boost levels consistently is also troublesome with this configuration. At partial throttle, full boost may still be reached, making the vehicle difficult to control with precision. Electronic systems can allow the throttle to control the level of boost, so that only at full throttle will maximum boost levels be achieved and intermediate levels of boost can be held consistently at partial throttle levels.

A simple manual boost controller. A small screw is located in the top of the aluminum body to adjust bleed rate. This model is placed in the engine bay, however the vacuum line could be extended to allow it to reach into the passenger compartment.

Manual boost control

A manual boost controller is a simple mechanical and pneumatic control to allow some pressure from the wastegate actuator to escape or bleed out to the atmosphere or back into the intake system. This can be as simple as a T-fitting on the boost control line near the actuator with a small bleeder screw. The screw can be turned out to varying degrees to allow air to bleed out of the system, relieving pressure on the wastegate actuator, thus increasing boost levels. These devices are popular due to their negligible cost compared to other devices that may offer the same power increase.

Additionally, another type of manual boost controllers use a ball and spring to control the amount of boost. This is installed with one vacuum line coming from the intake somewhere after the turbocharger, and one vacuum line going to the wastegate. A knob changes the force on the spring which in turn dictates how much pressure is on the ball. The tighter the spring, the more boost that is needed to unseat the ball, and allow the boost pressure to reach the wastegate actuator. There is a bleed hole on the boost controller after the ball, to allow the pressurized air that would be trapped between the wastegate actuator and the ball after it is seated again. These type of Manual boost controllers are becoming vastly popular since they don't provide a boost leak, allowing faster spool times and better control than a "bleed type" boost controller.

Generally a manual boost controller will not be accessible from inside the car, though some are designed to be. An installation that allows access from inside the car (as opposed from inside the engine compartment) is more complex, as the tubing must be longer and a hole must be drilled. It is possible and beneficial to use two manual boost controllers at different settings with a solenoid to switch between them for two different boost pressure settings. Some factory turbocharged cars have a switch to regulate boost pressure, such as a setting designed for fuel economy and a setting for performance.

Manual boost controllers do not solve partial throttle/full boost, drivability, and response or lag issues. They can be used in conjunction with some electronic...(and so on)

The 12th series of Top Gear contained eight episodes,[1] and premiered on 2nd November 2008,[2] with the usual presenting team of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig. Clarkson was injured while filming this series, after crashing a lorry through a brick wall at 56 mph in the first episode's HGV challenge.[3]

The running joke regarding the Dacia Sandero continues from series 11, with the alteration that Clarkson is now the one making the announcement with feigned enthusiasm, to utter indifference from May (instead of vice versa). Each news segment also features one of the hosts wearing something unusual, like slippers or a garishly patterned shirt. The only reference to this is that one of the other hosts will, at some point in the segment, ask if they're wearing it for a bet. The Stig, instead of listening to music during power laps, now listens to morse code.

The final episode, the Top Gear: Vietnam Special, aired two weeks after the rest of the series as part of the BBC's Christmas lineup.[4]

Four 'Best Of' specials covering series eleven and twelve were broadcast between the first of January and the first of February 2009.

Series 12 Episode 1

2 November 2008

Michael Parkinson

Main Review: Clarkson tests the Porsche 911 GT2 and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 on the Top Gear track. Clarkson favoured the Gallardo, which went around the Top Gear test track at 1:19.5, because it was easier to drive and faster in a straight line. However, Clarkson didn't reveal the lap time of the Porsche until a later episode, in which he revealed a time of 1:19.5 also, tying the Lamborghini. The Gallardo was faster than its big brother, the Murcielago LP640 which did 1:19.8 in Series 9.

Challenge: The Top Gear team each buy a second hand truck and travel to "Top Gear's Secret Alpine Test Location" in Bedfordshire to test how easy it is to be a HGV driver. With their 5000 pound budget May buys a Scania 94D, Clarkson buys a Renault Magnum and Hammond an ERF EC11.

Challenge 1: The three had to decorate and personalize their trucks as drivers in "less developed countries like Australia and America" would. Richard made his ERF look like an American lorry with a bonnet which was actually a dog kennel, James decorated his with an Indian look and Jeremy gave his lorry a "stealth" look, which drastically reduced visibility.

Challenge 2: Jeremy, Richard and James would have to powerslide their lorries. Protesting that it was not possible, they watched a demonstration done by Rig Stig, The Stig's lorry driving cousin, "whose favorite song is Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward" and who has the "worlds largest collection of pornographical material" who did the slide in a modified MAN truck. All three tried their best but the lorries did not slide, although Jeremy slid off the chair in his lorry due to the "huge G-force" and since he did not fasten the seat belt, he injured himself.

Challenge 3: The next challenge was to go to the High Speed Bowl in Millbrook, but before that the three would have to hitch up a trailer with valuable cargo and drive around the Alpine course under three minutes. Richard had a car which was not fastened down properly as his 'valuable' cargo, James had a wedding cake and Jeremy had a stack of straw at one end of the trailer and an electric heater at the other. James finished first and completed the course in just over three minutes, although his cargo was damaged (made worse by his attempted to fix it); Richard's car fell off the trailer while he was still on the course (though he later said was 'stolen'); Jeremy finished last with the trailer on fire.

Challenge 4: The three would drive around the Millbrook High speed bowl, with the limiters deactivated (Trucks are limited to 56mph - 90kph) to discover the maximum speed of their lorries. James' lorry reached a maximum speed of 64.6mph, Jeremy's lorry reached 80mph, and Richard's reached a quick 90mph.

Challenge 5: Each presenter is required to do a hill start in their lorries, with something close to their hearts behind the trailer to keep them focused. The winner would receive a years worth of 'gentleman's literature'. Jeremy had his beloved drum kit behind his lorry, and was successful in the hill start, but Richard and James destroyed his drums regardless. Richard had Oliver (the Opel Kadett from the African Challenge, which has a new coat of paint and personalized number plate "OLIV3R") behind his lorry, and chickened out of the challenge. James had his grand piano placed behind his lorry. When his piano was being lowered down to the ground one of the piano legs fell off and was hoisted up to rest on a stack of porn magazines. James failed that challenge when he rolled back into the piano; much to the relief of...(and so on)

Gridiron Gang is a 2006 film starring Dwayne Johnson, Xzibit, L. Scott Caldwell, and Kevin Dunn. It was filmed in California at Camp Kilpatrick, a Los Angeles County Probation Department facility. It is loosely based on the true story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs during the 1990 season, the very first in which they played eleven man football. Kilpatrick is a facility located in Malibu, California for juvenile delinquents with multiple offenses, such as gang violence. The overall moral is that even though people deal with difficulties in their lives, these young teenagers overcome their fears and frustrations using self-discipline and learn to leave their problems on the football field. It was released on September 15, 2006 by Columbia Pictures.

Synopsis

The movie starts during an evening at the Kilpatrick detention center. Their supervisor, Malcolm Moore (Xzibit), is minding his own business when a kid named Roger (Michael J. Pagan) wraps his fist in a pillow case, gets up, and starts throwing punches at the kid sleeping next to him. Roger is immediately taken to another building, called "The Box", where they lock up kids with behavior problems.

Their other supervisor Sean Porter (Dwayne Johnson) walks into Roger's cell and starts beating Roger with a rolled-up magazine. Roger pleads that the guy he beat up was disrespecting his gang. Sean tells Roger he beat him because that is what Roger did to the rival gang member and tells him that he will only end up dead. Roger cools down and seems to understand what Sean is trying to tell him.

Roger is walking down the street with his cousin Willie Weathers (Jade Yorker) and Willie's girlfriend Danyelle (Jurnee Smollett). They are approached by C-Co and Lil' Dove, two teenage members of their gang, the 88's. The two members inform Willie and Roger that a rival gang, known as the 95's, has stolen one of their little brother's bikes. Roger and Willie just want to chill, but C-Co keeps forcing a gun into Roger's hand. saying that they may need to "apply force" to the 95's. They decide to go. Danyelle gets upset at this crazy act and walks away. Just when the four teenagers are heading towards the other gang's territory, a drive by occurs. When Lil' Dove gets shot, Willie and Roger try to help him. Willie and Roger start to run as the drive by shooters in the car chase them. They run up against a fence and Willie climbs over, but Roger is too late and is run over by the car.

While Willie is crying, his gang mates approach him and ask Willie to get revenge for his cousin. Free (Omari Hardwick) hands Willie a gun and tells him where to find the brother of the person behind the attack. Willie walks towards a grocery store and sees the target with his family. As Willie pulls out the gun, he is startled by the clerk, and he shoots at a window and runs home.

Back home, Willie's little brother is on the couch watching TV. When Willie sees his mother she has a black eye and bruises on her face, an obvious sign of abuse. Willie tells his mom to leave the man she is with and stop letting him do that to her. She tells Willie to "keep it down as he's in the kitchen," and Willie continues to tell his mother to "leave him and don't let him back in." The man gets physical with Willie because Willie refuses to back down. When Willie is pushed to the nearby couch, his mother comes to his defense. When the man hits his mother, Willie pulls out a gun and shoots the man. The police come and arrest Willie.

Back at the juvenile, Malcolm tells Sean the bad news about Roger's death. Sean is distraught, knowing that he could do very little for the kids out there. Sean figures he needs a new method to help keep these kids from getting killed on the street. Sean visits his sick mother (L. Scott Caldwell) in the hospital and they talk about how much he used to love football, so Sean decides to install football into their correctional center program. Reluctantly, he is granted permission by his supervisors.

He picks out a few kids in the room that he feels will benefit from this program and requires that they practice with him the following day. The next day Sean explains the rules about being on the football field....(and so on)

History

Condensation traps have been in use since the pre-Incan peoples inhabited the Andes.

A method for gathering water in condensation traps is still taught within the Argentinian Army, for use by specialist units that are expected to conduct extended patrols in the arid border areas of the Andes.

Methods

Several methods of trapping condensation exist:

First method

This method was first used by the peoples of the Andes. A pit is dug into the earth, at the bottom of which is placed the receptacle that will be used to catch the condensed water. Small branches are placed with one of their ends end inside the receptacle and their other ends up over the edge of the pit, forming a funnel to direct the condensed water into the receptacle. A lid is then built over this funnel, using more small branches, leaves, grasses, etc. The completed trap is left overnight, and moisture can be collected from the receptacle in the morning.

This method relies on the formation of dew or frost on the receptacle, funnel, and lid. Forming dew collects on and runs down the outside of the funnel and into the receptacle. This water would typically evaporate with the morning sun and thus vanish, but the lid traps the evaporating water and raises the humidity within the trap, reducing the amount of water that is lost. The shade produced by the lid also reduces the temperature within the trap, which further reduces the rate of water loss to evaporation.

Modern method

Today, with the advent of plastic sheeting, the moisture trap has become more efficient.

The method is very similar to that described above, but a single sheet of plastic is used instead of branches and leaves. The greater efficiency of this type of trap arises from the waterproof nature of the plastic, which doesn't let any water vapour pass through it (some water vapour escapes through the leaves and branches of the first method). This efficiency requires a certain amount of diligence of the part of the user, in that the plastic sheet must be firmly attached to the ground on all sides; this is often accomplished by using stones to weight the sheet down and/or covering the edges of the plastic sheet with earth (such as that dug out to make the hole in which the trap sits). Weighting the centre of the plastic sheet down with a stone forms the funnel via which the condensed water will run into the receptacle.

Transpiration Method

Water can be obtained by placing clear plastic bags over the leafy branch of a non-poisonous tree and tightly closing the bag's open end around the branch. Any holes in the bag must be sealed to prevent the loss of water vapour. The sun heats the air in the bag, lowering its humidity and drawing water from the leaves; gravity then causes the water to run to the lowest part of the bag. Water is collected by tapping (see under "cask beer tap" ) the bag and then resealing it. The leaves will continue to produce water as the roots draw it from the ground.

In using this method, the water should be drained off every two hours and stored. Tests indicate that if this is not done the leaves stop producing water. Probably the heavy concentration of moisture-laden air reduces the effectiveness of the sun.

If there are no large trees in the area, clumps of grass or small bushes can be placed inside the bag. If this is done the foliage will have to be replaced at regular intervals when water production is reduced, particularly if the foliage must be uprooted to place it in the bag.

Efficiency is greatest when the bag receives maximum sunshine at all times. Exposed roots are tested for water content. Soft, pulpy roots will yield the greatest amount of liquid for the least amount of effort.

Condensation Trap Efficiency

It should be noted that condensation traps are not in themselves a sustainable source of water; they are sources for extending or supplementing existing water sources or supplies, and should not be relied on to provide a person's daily requirement for water, since a trap measuring 16" in diameter by 12" deep will only yield around 100 to 150ml per day.

One method to increase the water output is to urinate into the pit before placing the receptacle in. This increases the moisture content of the earth, reducing the amount of water vapour that the earth can subsequently absorb.

Condensation Traps in Popular Culture

History

Pelican Products was founded in Torrance, California in 1976 by David and Arline Parker. It was originally a mail-order home business founded by David H. Parker in 1975. It was David Parker's desire to develop unique and practical products for the dive market. In October 2004, a private equity investment firm Behrman Capital, based in New York and San Francisco, paid about $200 million for Pelican Products. In August 2006, Behrman Capital announced that Lyndon J. Faulkner has been named CEO of Pelican Products, Inc. by its Board of Directors. He succeeds David H. Parker, who has retired from his role as Chief Executive Officer and was elected Vice Chairman of the Company抯 Board. In January 2009, Pelican Products announced the acquisition of long-time competitor, Hardigg Industries, the world抯 largest manufacturer of roto molded protective cases, based in South Deerfield, Mass. Pelican Products was supported in the acquisition by the New York and San Francisco based private equity group Behrman Capital. Collectively the new entity will employ more than 1,500 employees. Pelican Products now operates in 12 countries, has 22 offices globally and maintain six manufacturing locations throughout Europe and North America.

Cases

Main article: Pelican case

Pelican manufactures airtight, waterproof plastic cases that meet U.S. military, NATO, IEC, and ATA standards for waterproofing, stacking, impact, and durability.

Flashlights

Pelican flashlights (known as Pelican Lights) use Xenon, Halogen, and LED technology. Many are safety approved with features such as valves, anti-shock systems, and battery polarity guards. The safety approvals[1] include ETL (Edison Testing Labs), UL (Underwriters Laboratories), FM (Factory Mutual), CE-EX (ATEX Europe), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), MSHA (Mine Safety Health Administration)[2] and the AUS (Australian Board of Approvals). These flashlights are popular with divers due to their common waterproof feature. They are also highly regarded by Merchant Mariners who need a flashlight to be durable, waterproof and rated for hazardous environments due to their work environment.

Technology

Flashlight and equipment case technology that Pelican has made improvements on include the use of Gore-tex membranes in cases. Pelican also has its own patented designs, such as the Recoil LED. One of their newest inventions, the 7060 LED flashlight, is used by the Los Angeles Police Department as its standard issue duty light.[3][4]

Mass Media

The Travel Channel show John Ratzenberger's Made in America had an episode about Pelican products.[5] Also, Pelican cases and flashlights are used in many TV shows and movies:[6]

View of the Tornabuoni Chapel

The Tornabuoni Chapel (Italian: Cappella Tornabuoni) is the main chapel (or chancel) in the church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy. It is famous for the extensive and well-preserved fresco cycle on its walls, one of the most complete in the city, which was created by Domenico Ghirlandaio and his workshop between 1485 and 1490.

History

The main chapel of Santa Maria Novella was first frescoed in the mid-14th century by Andrea Orcagna. Remains of these paintings were found during restorations in the 1940s: these included, mostly in the vault, figures from the Old Testament. Some of these were detached and can be seen today in the Museum of the church.

By the late 15th century, Orcagna's frescoes were in poor condition. The Sassetti, a rich and powerful Florentine family who were the bankers of the Medici, had long held the right to decorate the main altar of the chapel, while the walls and the choir had been assigned to the Ricci family. However, the Ricci had never recovered from their bankruptcy in 1348, and so they arranged to sell their rights to the choir to the Sassetti. Francesco Sassetti wanted the new frescoes to portray stories of St. Francis of Assisi; however, the Dominicans, to whom Santa Maria Novella was entrusted, refused. Sassetti therefore moved the commission to the church of Santa Trinita, where Ghirlandaio executed one of his masterworks, the Sassetti Chapel. The rights to the chapel in Santa Maria Novella that were lost by the Sassetti were then sold by the Ricci to Giovanni Tornabuoni.

Ghirlandaio, who then had the largest workshop in Florence, did not lose the commission however, because on September 1, 1485 Giovanni Tornabuoni commissioned him to paint the main chapel, this time with the lives of the Virgin and St. John the Baptist, patron of Tornabuoni and of the city of Florence. It is possible that the new scenes followed the same pattern as Orcagna's.

Ghirlandaio worked to the frescoes from 1485 to 1490, with the collaboration of his workshop artists, who included his brothers Davide and Benedetto, his brother-in-law Sebastiano Mainardi and, probably, the young Michelangelo Buonarroti. The windows were also executed according to Ghirlandaio's design. The complex was completed by an altarpiece portraying the Madonna del Latte in Glory with Angel and Saints, flanked by two panels with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Lawrence. On the recto a Resurrection of Christ was painted. This work is now held divided between the Gem?ldegalerie, Berlin and the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.

Structure of the cycle

The cycle portrays on three walls the Life of the Virgi and the Life of St. John the Baptist. The left and right walls each have three rows, each divided into two rectangular scenes framed by fictive architecture, and surmounted by a large lunette beneath the vault. Each side wall has a total of seven narrative scenes which are read beginning from the bottom.

The chancel wall has a large mullioned window of three lights with stained glass, provided in 1492 by Alessandro Agolanti after Ghirlandaio's design. On the lower part of the wall is a donor portrait of Giovanni Tornabuoni and his wife Francesca Pitti, while on either side of the window are four smaller scenes portraying Dominican saints. Above the window is another large lunette, containing the Coronation of the Virgin. In the vault are depicted the Four Evangelists.

The life of the Blessed Virgin

The scenes are on the left side of the chapel:

The Expulsion of Joachim from the Temple

The Nativity of Mary

The Marriage of the Virgin

The Annunciation (central wall, mid-left)

Goldwork is the art of embroidery using metal threads. It is particularly prized for the way light plays on it. The term "goldwork" is used even when the threads are imitation gold, silver, or copper. The metal wires used to make the threads have never been entirely gold; they have always been gold-coated silver (silver-gilt) or cheaper metals, and even then the "gold" often contains a very low percent of real gold. Most metal threads are available in silver and sometimes copper as well as gold; some are available in colors as well.

Goldwork is always surface embroidery and free embroidery; the vast majority is a form of laid work or couching; that is, the gold threads are held onto the surface of the fabric by a second thread, usually of fine silk. The ends of the thread, depending on type, are simply cut off, or are pulled through to the back of the embroidery and carefully secured with the couching thread. A tool called a mellore or a stilleto is used to help position the threads and create the holes needed to pull them through.

History

Goldwork was originally developed in Asia, and has been used for at least 2000 years. Its use reached a remarkable level of skill in the Middle Ages, when a style called Opus Anglicanum was developed in England and used extensively in church vestments and hangings.[1] After this period it was also used frequently in the clothing and furnishings of the royalty and nobility throughout Europe, and still later on military and other regalia.[2] Goldwork is currently a fairly uncommon skill, even among embroiderers who work in other free embroidery styles; it is now most commonly used for the highest-quality church vestments and art embroidery. It has always been reserved for occasional and special use only, due to both the expense of the materials and the time to create the embroidery, and because the threads - no matter how expertly applied - will not hold up to frequent laundering of any kind.

Types of metal thread

A variety of threads exists, in order to create differing textures.

Passing is the most basic and common thread used in goldwork; it consists of a thin strip of metal wound around a core of cotton or silk. For gold thread this is typically yellow, or in older examples orange; for silver, white or gray. This is always attached by couching, either one or two threads at a time, and pulled through to the back to secure it. When multiple threads must be laid next to each other, a technique called bricking is used: the position of the couching stitches is offset between rows, producing an appearance similar to a brick wall. This same type of thread is used in making cloth of gold.

Japan thread, sometimes called jap, is a cheaper replacement for passing, and is far more commonly used in modern goldwork. It appears nearly identical, but rather than a strip of metal, a strip of foil paper is wrapped around the core.

Detail of embroidered antependium, Ghent, 1660.

Buillion or Purl is structurally a very long spring, hollow at the core; it can be stretched apart slightly and couched between the wraps of wire, or cut into short lengths and applied like beads. This thread comes in both shiny and matte versions.

Jaceron or Pearl purl is similar to buillion, but with a much wider piece of metal used in making it, such that it looks like a string of pearl-like beads when couched down between the wraps of metal. Lizerine is a very similar thread.

Freize or Check purl is again similar, but the metal used is shaped differently, producing a faceted, sparkly look.

Faconnee or Crimped purl is almost identical to buillion, but has been crimped at intervals.

Rococco and the similar Crinkle cordonnet are made of wire tightly wrapped around a cotton core, with a wavy or kinked appearance.

Milliary wire is a wire core wrapped with finer wire.

Plate is a strip of metal a few millimeters (1/8") wide; often this is used to fill small shapes by folding it back and forth, hiding the couching stitches under the folds.

Flat Worm or simply Oval thread is a thin plate wrapped around a yarn core and flattened slightly. This is used like plate, but is considerably easier to work with.

Twists or Torsade, threads made of multiple strands of metal twisted together are also sometimes used, some of which, such as Soutache, sometimes have different colored metals or colored non-metal threads twisted...(and so on)
