Steven J. Sasson (born 1950) is an electrical engineer and the inventor of the digital camera.

Biography

His invention began in 1975 with a very broad assignment from his supervisor at Eastman Kodak Company, Gareth A. Lloyd: Could a camera be built using solid state electronics, solid state imagers, an electronic sensor known as a charge coupled device (CCD) that gathers optical information.

Texas Instruments Inc. had designed an electronic camera in 1972 that was filmless but not digital, using instead analog electronics. After a literature search on digital imaging came up virtually empty, Sasson drew on whatever was available: an analog-to-digital converter adapted from Motorola Inc. components, a Kodak movie-camera lens and the tiny CCD chips introduced by Fairchild Semiconductor in 1973.

He set about constructing the digital circuitry from scratch, using oscilloscope measurements as a guide. There were no images to look at until the entire prototype an 8-pound (3.6-kilogram), toaster-size contraption was assembled. In December 1975, Sasson and his chief technician persuaded a lab assistant to pose for them. The black-and-white image, captured at a resolution of .01 megapixels (10,000 pixels), took 23 seconds to record onto a digital cassette tape and another 23 seconds to read off a playback unit onto a television. Then it popped up on the screen.

"You could see the silhouette of her hair," Sasson said. But her face was a blur of static. "She was less than happy with the photograph and left, saying 'You need work,"' he said. But Sasson already knew the solution: reversing a set of wires, the assistant's face was restored.

In 1978, Sasson and Lloyd were issued United States Patent 4,131,919 for their digital camera.

Sasson now works to protect the intellectual capital of his employer, Eastman Kodak Company.

History

Shaft was founded on September 1, 1975 by Hiroshi Wakao, former Mushi Production's animator. The company was originally founded to paint the animation but later worked on animation production as a subcontractor. They were able to produce their own first original series, Yume kara samenai (???????? ,Yume kara samenai?) in 1987.

In 2000, after Shaft cooperating with Gainax to produce a DVD special of remastered Gunbuster, they were in joint production with Gainax to produce Mahoromatic, This Ugly and Beautiful World, and He is My Master. After Hiroshi Wakao's retirement in 2004, Kubota Mitsutoshi has become Shaft's representative director. Their painting group has also been downsized in order to strengthen their digital group.

Characteristics

Since 2004, Akiyuki Shinbo, Tatsuya Oishi and Shin ?numa has participate in most of Shaft's production starting with Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase. The studio has grown unique to their use of gags and references to another anime by writing it on chalkboard in the classroom or any available empty space in the background.

Types of cosmetology

Hair stylist

A hair stylist specializes in the styling of hair, including cutting, chemical services (relaxers, perms, and color as well as restorative treatments)

Shampoo technician

A shampoo technician shampoos and conditions a client's hair in preparation for the hair stylist. A shampoo tech may assist with rinsing permanent waves, and shampooing color and chemical relaxers out of the hair after processing. Shampoo techs are normally only employed by corporate or concept salons and large-volume beauty salons that are operated simultaneously. In some states, a shampoo tech must have a cosmetology permit. This is usually a temporary position, held by a person who is newly licensed with little or no experience.

Manicurist

A manicure is a cosmetic treatment for the fingernails and/or hands. The word "manicure" derives from Latin: manus for hand, cura for "care". When performed on the feet, such a treatment is called a pedicure.

Many manicures start by soaking the hands or feet in a softening substance and the application of lotion. A common type of manicure involves shaping the nails and application of nail polish. A manicure may also include the application of artificial nail tips, acrylics or artificial nail gels. Some manicures can include the painting of pictures or designs on the nails or applying small decals or imitation jewels.

In many areas, manicurists are licensed and follow regulation. Since skin is manipulated and is sometimes trimmed, there is a certain risk of spreading infection when tools are used across many people and therefore sanitation is a serious issue.

Esthetician

Facials may include the use of a facial mask.

An esthetician specializes in the study of skin care, including facials, microdermabrasion, body wraps (relaxing treatments which involve hot linens, plastic sheets, and blankets), salt glows (an exfoliation treatment), waxing as a form of hair removal, cosmetic make-up services and other services with advanced training. Estheticians may work independently in a spa or salon or may assist a doctor in his or her practice. Working with a doctor an esthetician may perform more advanced services that require a doctor's supervision, such as deep chemical peels. In addition to performing beauty services, an esthetician must be skilled in recommending skin and body care products and retailing them to their clients. Many state board cosmetology schools do not offer training in retailing, but post graduate colleges will offer training in retailing skills.

An esthetician can be licensed solely for that skill. An esthetician is not necessarily licensed in cosmetology, but is typically well versed in knowledge of skin care.

Beauty therapist

Specializes in all treatments that include, hair removal, massage, body wraps, skin care, eye lash and brow tinting, make up along with machine treatments such as non surgical facelifts and faradic muscle tone. She / he may under go special training to provide specialist treatments such as laser hair removal and electrolysis.

Nail technician

A nail technician specializes in the art form and care of nails. This includes manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails, gel nails, nail wraps, fake nails, etc. They are also knowledgeable in nail irregularities and diseases, and may be able to identify such problems. They do not treat diseases, and would typically refer a client to a physician.

Electrologist

An electrologist offers services with the use of an electrolysis machine. As opposed to the hair removal via waxing offered by an esthetician, hair removal via electrolysis is permanent. It has recently been argued that barbers are also cosmetologists who extend the hair stylist speciality with services especially for men, such as shaving.

Sneakbox (1880)

A sneakbox is a small boat that can be sailed, rowed, poled or sculled. It is predominantly associated with the Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, just as the canoe-like Delaware Ducker is associated with the New Jersey marshes along the Delaware River near Philadelphia.

Railbird skiffs and garvey-like sneakboxes are other American hunting-boat types. Typically, they were all used for hunting waterfowl and marsh birds but also have been used by trappers.

The Original Sneakbox

As with most American small craft, its origin is not well-documented. It is generally accepted that Captain Hazelton Seaman invented the first sneakbox about 1836, in West Creek, New Jersey.

It was usually built of white cedar which was once plentiful throughout the mid-Atlantic states.

It was conceived as a low-profile, lightweight, seaworthy hunting craft that one man could easily handle in any of the weather conditions likely to be encountered in the Jersey marshes.

The first printed description appeared in Forest and Stream on April 3, 1874 in a short letter from Robert B. White. White included a rough dimensional drawing that is recognizably a sneakbox.

The caption indicates:a an Apron 1 1 1 shows where it is nailed to deck

b b Cock-pit

c Trunk

d d d Stool [Decoy] Rack

e e Rowlocks

The thing with the U-shaped cutout represents the folding wooden oarlock used.

Nathaniel Bishop: Canoeist and Cruiser

It was the 1879 book Four Months in a Sneak Box by Nathaniel H. Bishop that put this small boat on the map. Bishop went down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and eastward along the Gulf Coast into Florida in Centennial Republic, his sneakbox. It was something of a stunt in commemoration of the nation's 100th anniversary.

Nevertheless Four Months is one of the first small-boat camp-cruising narratives published in America, where the author was not an explorer or adventurer, but simply a sportsman or boating enthusiast.

An e-book is here: Four Months in a Sneak-Box: A boat voyage of 2600 miles down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and along the Gulf of Mexico.

Bishop was born in Medford, Mass. He had an adventurous streak, and at 17 worked his way south from Massachusetts on a sailing ship, then hiked across South America. This is the subject of his first book (1869) The Pampas and Andes: A Thousand Miles' Walk Across South America.

By 1872 he was a canoe enthusiast along the lines of British canoeist John "Rob Roy" MacGregor. Bishop was for many years the Secretary of the ACA, or American Canoe Association. He was one of the association's founders.

He ordered the 18-foot canoe Mayeta, built by J. S. Lamson, Bordentown, N.J, and started on a two-man voyage from Quebec. The voyage was abandoned because the canoe was too heavy, and Bishop apparently didn't like company.

He obtained Maria Theresa, a 58-pound paper canoe built by Elisha Waters, Troy, N.Y., and started again. Bishop rigged his canoe with rowlocks; he did not use a double paddle, and he did not sail Maria Theresa much on his Florida cruise 1874-5, published as Voyage of the Paper Canoe in 1878.

After these three books, Bishop seems to have stopped writing except for correspondence concerning the ACA; but no one yet has attempted to create a bibliography of Bishop's later contributions to boating and sporting magazines.

For a short biography of Nathaniel H. Bishop (1837-1902), see Brief Bishop Bio by Eric Eldred.

Cruising Sneakboxes

After Bishop rowed (he hardly used his sail) down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in 1876, the boating press took notice and people began to develop sailing sneakboxes as an alternative for solo cruising to the sailing canoe.

See this link for Early Drawings.

Bishop's own words from Four Months about early sneakboxes are worth quoting:

This remarkable little boat has a history which does not reach very far back into the present century. With the assistance of Mr. William Errickson of Barnegat, and Dr. William P. Haywood of West Creek, Ocean County, New Jersey, I have been able to rescue from oblivion and bring to the light of day a correct history of the Barnegat sneak-box.Captain Hazelton Seaman, of West Creek village, New Jersey, a boat-builder and an expert shooter of wild-fowl, about the year 1836, conceived the idea of constructing for his own use a low-decked boat, or gunning-punt, in which, when its deck was covered with sedge, he could secrete himself from the wild-fowl while gunning in Barnegat and Little Egg Harbor bays.It was important that the boat should be...(and so on)

Resistance wire is electrical wire used for its resistance. It is routinely used at high temperatures, so normally also has high melting point. Resistance wire is usually used for high-power resistors and heating elements, which produce heat used in electric heaters, electric ovens and toasters, and many other appliances.

Types

Nichrome, a non-magnetic alloy of nickel and chromium, is commonly used to make resistance wire because it has a high resistivity and resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. When used as a heating element, resistance wire is usually wound into coils.

Constantan is used where resistance is required to not change with temperature. Constantan is readily solderable, though soldered joints have limited temperature range.

Many elements and alloys have been used as resistance wire for special purposes. Copper is also included for comparison.Material Resistance

A Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD high-definition Digital Video Recorder Cable Box, issued by Time Warner Cable.

The Explorer 8300 is a digital video recorder (DVR) manufactured by Scientific Atlanta and used by many digital cable companies. It works like a regular cable box with DVR capabilities and features an 80 or 160 GB PATA internal hard drive. Some versions can also be used with an external SATA hard drive through the eSATA connector on the back. The firmware/software generally comes from one of two sources: the Scientific Atlanta Resident Application (SARA) or the PASSPORT software from Aptiv Digital (a spin-off of Pioneer). The choice of firmware is determined by the cable operator and the equipment available at the cable head-end.

Another model, the 8300HD, is a DVR capable of displaying and recording high definition (HD) as well as standard definition (SD) cable television signals. The 8300HD is generally equipped with the 160 GB PATA internal hard drive that can hold ~ 90 hours of SD or ~ 20 hours of HD programming. The 8300HD also comes with an HDMI port versus the DVI port on the older 8000HD model. The 8300HD also will (current software versions) output RF, RCA Composite, S-Video, and Component Video (SD & HD) simultaneously, which the 8000HD could not.

Still another model, the 8300HDC, has the same functionality as the 8300HD. However, it includes a multi-stream cableCARD. The box is a host for the card, which authorizes the box for use. Security protocols are contained within the card instead of within the set-top box itself (known as "separable security"), as it had been in the past. This was done to be in compliance with the FCC mandate that all new set-top boxes employ separable security.

The HDMI implementation does not work with all splitters, switches, and switching receivers/converters.

In the United States, these converter/tuner boxes are generally owned by the cable company and rented to cable subscribers. In Canada, they are generally owned by the subscriber, purchased from their cable company or retail outlets. Those obtained through auction sites such as eBay must be authorized by the cable service provider by giving them the MAC address of the device so that it can be added to your account. They are not however required to allow you to use this equipment, but if you opt to do so they will not be responsible for any service issues you may have.

There is quite a bit of misunderstanding regarding FCC regulations Title 47, Sec. 76.1201, which states the following:

No multichannel video programming distributor [Cable Co] shall prevent the connection or use of navigation devices [converter boxes] to or with its multichannel video programming system [Cable TV], except in those circumstances where electronic or physical harm would be caused by the attachment or operation of such devices or such devices may be used to assist or are intended or designed to assist in the unauthorized receipt of service.

The above quote applies to devices such as third-party digital video recorders (such as TiVo), and not to contracted second-party equipment such as the Scientific Atlanta 8300 converter box. The reason cable providers are not required to add these boxes as customer-owned equipment (such as they can do with cable modems) is that these boxes are NOT available for retail purchase in the United States, and if they are being sold by a private party, then they have been stolen from the cable provider that owns the box. A cable provider cannot be compelled by any FCC regulation to aid in the illegal use of stolen property.

External Expansion Ports

Certain versions of the Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 8300 (the 8300 HD, 8300 MR, and 8300 HD-MR) DVRs are compatible with external SATA drives so that you can expand the amount of recordable hours of programming that can be stored. At this time there are SATA drives from Apricorn, Maxtor and Seagate that are only compatible with boxes running the SARA software. Cable companies have a choice between running their 8300 DVR boxes on SARA or Passport software. Several providers currently support external SATA drives, including Time Warner and Charter. Seagate's consumer line of external SATA (eSATA) drives are supported, but its flagship Freeagent Pro drives are not compatible. Western Digital offers My DVR Expander, which is similar to their My Book series of external hard storage, but specifically tested to be compatible with the Explorer 8300 series of DVRs (8300, 8300 HD, 8300 MR, and 8300 HD-MR). Many external eSATA enclosures will work with the Explorer 8300 series of DVRs with generic hard drives besides those specifically certified to do so.

Complexion refers to the natural color, texture, and appearance of the skin, especially that of the face. The word is derived from the Late Latin complexi, which initially referred in general terms to a combination of things, and later in physiological terms, to the balance of humors.

Varying complexions

The four humours were four fluids that were thought to permeate the body and influence its health. The concept was developed by ancient Greek thinkers around 400 BC and developed further by Galen.[1] People were thought to be either Choleric, Melancholic, Phlegmatic, or Sanguine.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, the Latin term complexio served as the translated form of the Greek word crasis, meaning temperament.[1] The term emperament referred to the balance of the qualities of hot, wet, cold, and dry; each human body carried a different mixture of the elements.[2] Thus, the Scythians, who lived in a cold climate, were considered older and moister in complexion; the Ethiopians were considered hotter and dryer.[2] Complexion was defined as hat quality which results from the mutual interaction and interpassion of the four contrary primary qualities residing within the elements. These elements are so minutely intermingled as each to lie in very intimate relationship to one another. Their opposite powers alternately conquer and become conquered until a quality is reached which is uniform throughout the whole: this is the complexion.3]

As Matthew Simon writes, ince it served as a fundamental concept, not only in physiology but also in pathology and therapy, complexion theory provided important support for the idea that medicine constituted a unified and rational body of knowledge.1] By observation and judgment, medieval physicians determined the proper complexion of the individual when healthy.[4] The body was healthy when all was in balance, but diagnosis was difficult, as there was no absolute measure of the right complexion, since this varied for individuals.[4] Balance was thought to be restored by various remedies, which included bloodletting, scarifying, purging, and eating certain foods.[5]

Complexion was thought to be an indicator of one's character. The Spanish work known as Corbacho, written by Alfonso Martez de Toledo (ca. 1398a. 1470), includes a chapter called "De las complexiones." In it he describes the personalities of men of varying complexions: "There are others who are melancholic: these men correspond to the Earth, which is the fourth element, which is cold and dry. These men are very angry, without a sense of tact or moderation... They have no sense of temperance in anything they do, and only bang their head against the wall. They're very iniquitous, petulant, miserable...6]

Complexion, in its original sense, engaged the attention of philosophers and musical theorists from ancient times right through to the Renaissance and beyond, in relation to the most favourable balancing of the 'qualities' or elements in order to heal and invigorate the soul: from Pythagoras and the musical theorist Aristoxenus, through Plato's dialogue Phaedo, Aristotle, Saint Augustine in his thesis on music, and Aquinas; and in the Florentine Renaissance, Marsilio Ficino in his work on the immortality of the soul, the Theologia Platonica.

Thus there are many references which filter through into Shakespeare's plays and sonnets derived from this body of thought; particularly in the description of important characters, and to the power of music above all to 'charm the savage breast', adjust the elements, and restore the equilibrium and balance, the 'harmony' of the soul: his characters call for music and are spellbound or restored by it, and in elevated mood, may hear it in the air, or sense its immortal harmonies everywhere.

Many surnames arose out of the existence of a complexion whose particularities may have differed from that of the village or town population, and thus attracted enough notice to warrant a nickname. The Irish surname Rogan (from Ruadh) referred to a person with red hair, or a ruddy complexion. The Scottish surname Bain (from b) referred to a fair-haired person, while Dunn (from donn) implies brown/dark hair, and Duff (from dubh) implies black hair. The English surname Brown, an extremely common surname in the English-speaking world, was originally applied to anyone with a slightly darker complexion, in the same manner that the surname White was applied to anyone with a particularly light complexion. The surname Gough is derived from the Welsh goch or coch, meaning "red" or "ruddy." King William II of England was called William Rufus ("the Red") because of his ruddy complexion. Ludovico il Moro ("the Moor") was called as such because of his swarthy complexion.

PUNTARVOLO: What complexion, or what stature bears he?

GENTLEMAN: Of your stature, and very near upon your complexion.

PUNTARVOLO: Mine is melancholy.

History

LiFePO4 was discovered by John Goodenough's research group at the University of Texas in 1996[1],[2] as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries. Because of its low cost, non-toxicity, the high abundance of iron, its excellent thermal stability, safety characteristics, good electrochemical performance, and high specific capacity (170 mA/g) it gained some market acceptance.[3][4]

The key barrier to commercialization was its intrinsically low electrical conductivity. This problem, however, was then overcome partly by reducing the particle size and effectively coating the LiFePO4 particles with conductive materials such as carbon, and partly by employing the doping[3] approaches developed by Yet-Ming Chiang and his coworkers at MIT using cations of materials such as aluminum, niobium, and zirconium. It was later shown that most of the conductivity improvement was due to the presence of nanoscopic carbon originating from organic precursors.[5] Products using the carbonized and doped nanophosphate materials developed by Chiang are now in high volume mass production by A123Systems and other companies[citation needed], and are used in industrial products by major corporations including Black and Decker's DeWalt brand, General Motors' Chevrolet Volt, Daimler, Cessna and BAE Systems.

Most lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) used in consumer electronics products are lithium cobalt oxide batteries (LiCoO2). Other varieties of lithium-ion batteries include lithium-manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) and lithium-nickel oxide (LiNiO2). The batteries are named after the material used for their cathodes; the anodes are generally made of carbon and a wide variety of electrolytes are used.

Advantages and disadvantages

The LiFePO4 battery uses a lithium-ion-derived chemistry and shares many of its advantages and disadvantages with other lithium ion battery chemistries. The key advantages for LiFePO4 are the safety (resistance to thermal runaway) and the high current or peak-power rating. Cost is claimed to be a major difference as well, but, that cannot be verified until the cells are more widely used in the marketplace.

LFP batteries have some drawbacks:

The specific energy (energy/volume) of a new LFP battery is somewhat lower than that of a new LiCoO2 battery. Battery manufacturers across the world are currently working to find ways to maximize the energy storage performance and reduce size & weight.[6]

Brand new LFP's have been found to fail prematurely if they are "deep cycled" (discharged below 33% level) too early. A break-in period of 20 charging cycles is currently recommended by some distributors.[citation needed]

Rapid charging will shorten lithium-ion battery (including LFP) life-span when compared to traditional trickle charging.[citation needed]

The lithium reserves are estimated at 30,000 tonnes in 2015[7].

While LiFePO4 cells have lower voltage and energy density than normal, LiCoO2 Li-ion cells, this disadvantage is offset over time by the slower rate of capacity loss (aka greater calendar-life) of LiFePO4 when compared with other lithium-ion battery chemistries (such as LiCoO2 "cobalt" or LiMnO2 "manganese spinel" based Lithium-ion polymer batteries or Lithium-ion batteries).[8][9] For example:

After one year of use, a LiFePO4 cell typically has approximately the same energy density as a normal, LiCoO2 Li-ion cell.

Beyond one year of use, a LiFePO4 cell is likely to have higher energy density than a normal, LiCoO2 Li-ion cell due to the differences in their respective calendar-lives.

(Redirected from Canon PowerShot A95)

The Canon PowerShot A is a series of digital cameras released by Canon. The A-series is Canon's budget line of cameras, although its feature set range encompasses low-end point-and-shoot cameras to high-end prosumer cameras now capable of rivaling Canon's flagship G-series.

Models

The series began with the A5 series, which was a very basic point-and-shoot camera line. The Axx series that followed offered full manual control (on most models) in a fairly bulky body. The A100/200/3xx/4xx series cameras are stripped-down with very little manual controls. The Axx series has branched off into the A5xx (replaced by the A1xxx series), A6xx, and A7xx series (the latter replaced by the A2xxx series).

100-metre round pool allows for endless swims without having to stop and change direction. In the middle of this pool is a regular rectangular sports pool having adjustable depth.

Vandkulturhuset means "Water Culture House" and refers to an aquatics facility located within the DGI-byen conference and hotel complex, completed in 1997.

Vandkulturhuset includes a hundred-metre round pool that allows for "endless" (no need to stop and change direction) swims. The round pool has a hydraulic stage in the center for concerts or banquets, in which the round pool forms a moat around the musicians or diners.

This pool is also the site of the underwater concert for ICMC 2007 (International Computer Music Conference).

Vandkulturhuset also includes variously themed pools such as a climbing gym above water (where participants can fall down into the water), a trampoline above the water, as well as a standard platform.

There two of the pools feature viewing areas with underwater glass walls.

Pools

Vandkulturhuset features a variety of different kinds of pools as architectural sculpture, ranging from flowing curves with gentle slopes, to angular and dramatic spaces.

Underwater windows allow bathers to keep visual contact with each other, while in and around various activity areas.

There are six pools in the main DGI-byen aquatics area, which provide a variety of different kinds of bathing experiences at a variety of different temperatures.

These six pools are as follows:

Seven-sided pool which has:

Trampoline entry (bathers can bounce on a trampoline to enter the water);

Climbing gym located above water, so that if and when climbers fall, they land in the water;

12inch (1 foot) concerte platform with bouncy rubber and plastic-strip material

where the platform heights were chosen deliberately so that none of them would correspond exactly to competition heights (e.g. 4.9m platform rather than 5m platform), such that the pool would not be used for competitions (i.e. to ensure hotel guests and members of the public would never be excluded from using it during competitions).

Circular hot tub that alternates between 15 minutes of bather access, and 15 minutes of cleaning (50% duty cycle, 15 bathing minutes per half hour cycle).

Large circular pool

Competition pool inside the circular pool. The competition pool has an adjustable-depth floor that not only goes to zero depth, but can go to negative depth (i.e. so that the pool floor is up above the water's surface), so that it can be used as a raised stage for banquets (tables and chairs) or for an orchestra to play on, wherein the large circular pool forms a moat around the orchestra.

Activity pool with circular mushroom shower as well as circular waterfall, and bubble jets

Warm pool with ramp entrance, and underwater viewing area

Banquets and concerts

Hydraulophone performance at DGI-byen pool

Audience members at the ICMC 2007 underwater immersed-music hydraulophone concert

Vandkulturhuset is an important cultural hub in Copenhagen, where a variety of significant events, such as banquets and concerts, take place, in the central pool when the depth is set to less than zero (i.e. using the central pool as a raised stage, surrounded by the waters of the round pool). Additionally, various performances use the entire complex, allowing participants to move from one pool to another, while experiencing an immersive performance space.

Acoustics

A plasmaphone was installed in front of the acoustical barrier wall, using it as a sound reflector for an Immsersive Music concert in August 2007.

The various pools are acoustically separated into three main regions:

The main area with circular pool and rectangular pool in the middle of it;

The deep pool with platforms;

The warm pools: family pool, hot tub, etc.

The main pools are separated from the warm pools by a glass wall.

The main pools are separated from the deep pool by a geometric sculpture consisting of angular slanted walls. The walls do not reach all the way to the ceiling. This allows visual contact between the platform on the high tower, and the main pools, etc. (i.e. the view from the high platform includes the main pools, and bathers on the high tower are visible from the main pools), while providing acoustic isolation, so that the sounds of the splashing from bathers descending from the platforms down into the deep pool are not likely...(and so on)

A metal wind chime

Wind chimes are chimes constructed from suspended tubes, rods or other objects and are often made of metal or wood. Wind chimes are usually hung outside of a building and are intended to be played by the wind. Sound can be produced when the tubes or rods come in contact with a suspended central clapper, in the form of a ball or horizontal disk, or each other. Wind chimes may be used to observe changes in wind direction, depending on where they are hung.

History

Modern wind chimes have their origins in Indian wind bells. By the second century CE, these wind bells were being hung on the corners of large pagodas with the purpose of scaring away birds and evil spirits [1]. Later, wind bells were introduced to China and were also hung in temples, palaces and homes. Japanese glass wind bells known as F?rin (??) have been produced since the Edo period [2]. Wind chimes are thought to be good luck in parts of Asia and are used in Feng Shui.

Sound

Wind chimes

A recording of wind chimes.

Problems listening to this file? See media help.

Chimes produce inharmonic (as opposed to harmonic) spectra, although if they are hung at about 1/5th of their length (22.4%)[3], the higher partials are dampened and the fundamental is brought out. This is common practice in high-quality wind chimes, which are also usually hung so the center ball strikes the center of the wind chime's length. Frequency is determined by the length, width, thickness, and material. There are formulas that help predict the proper length to achieve a particular note, though a bit of fine tuning is often needed.

In instruments such as an organ pipe, the pitch is determined primarily by the length of the air column. It is the air that vibrates. The pipe material helps determine the "timbre" or "voice" of the pipe, but the air column determines the pitch. In a wind chime, the pipe itself is being struck and the air column has little to do with the sound produced.

Materials

A close-up of metal rods on a wind chime

Wind chimes can be made of materials other than metal or wood and in shapes other than tubes or rods. Other wind chimes materials include glass, bamboo, shell, stone and porcelain[4]. More exotic items, such as silverware or cookie cutters, can also be recycled to create wind chimes[5]. The selected material can have a large impact on the sound a wind chime produces. The sounds produced are not tunable to specific notes and range from pleasant tinkling to dull thuds.

The tone will depend on factors such as the material, the exact alloy, and heat treatment and the use of a solid cylinder or a tube. If a tube is used, the wall thickness also has an impact on the tone. Tone may also depend on the hanging method. The tone quality will also depend on the material of the object that is used to hit the chimes.

Use in music

David Sitek with a wind chime suspended from his guitar.

Different types of wind chimes have also been used in recent years in classical music and are listed as a percussion instrument. The following is a brief list of composers works who have used them:

Oliver Messiaen: Saint-Fran?ois d'Assise (one set of glass, shell and wood chimes)

Toshiro Mayuzumi: Bugaku (one set of wood and glass chimes)

Giles Swayne Symphony No. 1 (one set of glass chimes)

David Sitek, of American rock band TV on the Radio, sometimes hangs a wind chime from the end of his guitar to add texture to his music[6].
